Non-existant service - hopefully replacement is good
Well, I should have read the reviews here and other Haier products before I just submitted to Amazon for a replacement, and should have done a full return of this gift instead. My wife got this for my for Christmas and I just opened the box this morning. Lucky me two things happened this morning with the box: 1) it gets destroyed - there is almost no way not to have this happen, and 2) I tossed the box and all shipping pieces just minutes before my trash guys picked up all our trash this morning.

Problem: The door has oil/grease dripping down the glass, between the panes. There is no way to fix this problem since I'm assuming the panes are sealed too for efficiency. [....]

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!
I ordered this for my parents in Hawaii. From day 1, there was condensation on the front of the glass to the point of needing newpapers and plastic containers to catch the water. When I tried to remedy the situation appx 120 days later when visted my parents on holiday, the repair tech told me that I needed a new door. When I tried to get a new door through Haier, I was told that since it is a "non functioning item", it would not be covered...and "oh, there is no service support in Hawaii anyways." I tried to explain that the door "wasn't functioning and if the could send me a new one?" They told me it was "out of warranty" ANYONE WANTING TO BUY THIS PRODUCT...BEWARE OF THE SERVICE SUPPORT YOU WILL NOT GET FROM HAIER!!!!! Even the repairman said they don't want to support ANY Haier products because they do not work well and they have a hard time getting support from Haier!!!

A terrific first wine cellar..
As an enthusiastic wine-lovin' 20-something, I was looking for my first, decent-quality cellar to store at least a case of wine. I live in a city but it's not a *real* one like Manhattan, so I buy bottles in bulk; otherwise, I'd have to scrounge around town with my fingers crossed hoping that the local wine store will have a decent bottle in stock. I usually order about a case at a time online and I wanted a way to protect the wines from the wildly fluctuating temperatures in my apt. (heat turned up to 80 degrees in winter; A/C at 65 in summer).

The Haier HVF020ABB is much nicer than the picture and you can fit 22 bottles in the cooler at once (23 bottles if you're a Tetris player :). True, it's important not to cram the bottles /too/ tightly, but my bottles still have plenty of air circulation (and more elbow room than they would have had if stacked in a wooden storage cube/crate).

The digital temperature read-out is great -- I've never been good at judging temperatures (i know that my fridge is too cold only when ice crystals start forming on the milk). Wine cellaring is tricky enough without all of the extra gizmos and guesswork -- you'll be glad you sprung for this model instead of, say, the Haier HVFM20ABB, which is a little cheaper but does not offer a digital readout or a digital temperature adjuster.

This unit is also looks much nicer than the picture would have you believe. The construction and materials are just as described and if I took a picture of it myself, it would probably appear just as it does on amazon. I can't put my finger on it, but somehow it just looks less chintzy in 3-dimensions. The tinted, curved-glass door may have something to do with its improved appearance (you can't really see the curvature in the image provided). The interior light gives off a soft, rose hue due to the pinkish light fixture -- nice touch.

Now for the drawbacks (it /is/ a relatively inexpensive cellar, after all -- you can't really expect it to be perfect):

1. The temperature is not consistent throughout the entire unit -- but if you're like me, this may work to your advantage. Using a thermometer, I measured an eight-degree difference between the upper- and lower halves of the cellar. This will cause only a small change in actual wine temperatures -- maybe 2-3 degrees -- but I simply keep my whites on the bottom (where it's cooler) and reds on the shelves. Problem solved. I'm not interested in storing the bottles for years and years, so I don't mind slight deviations from the so-called "ideal" wine storage temperatures --- we're talking about a degree or two at most (if you can even find two people to agree on an ideal temp).

2. The Haier cellar is not thermo-electric; it uses a compressor. What does this mean to you? Well, again, if you're like me it means practically nothing. Compressors "click on" every now and then to cool the unit and some people think that, over time, the very slight vibrations from the compressor will damage the wine. But we're talking about long-term storage; my wines are consumed in a matter of months. And just think about how much the bottles are shaken while in transit to your local wine store! Simply put, thermo-electric units don't vibrate so if you want to be on the safe side, a T-E is probably a better choice for long-term wine cellaring.

3. The shelves don't slide out so easily. They lock in slightly at the back to prevent tipping, I assume. But do you really need it to slide out? I surely don't. It's not as though there are rows of wine behind the visible row -- what you see is what you have. You can always use wine tags if you don't want to move the bottles too often.

4. The instruction booklet is meager. I had read on other retail websites that the unit ought to be kept upright at room temperature for 24-hours before plugging it in. I had expected the handbook to mention something about this, which it didn't. It covered the basics but beyond that, you're on your own. FYI, I /did/ keep it unplugged for a day before using it, just in case...

5. The unit doesn't offer UV protection. True, the glass is tinted, but it will not protect your wines from UV rays. I keep my Haier in a large, dark and well-ventilated walk-in closet. It is extremely important to shelter your bottles from sunlight. It would behoove you to look for a unit with UV glass if you don't have a dark indoor area to place your cellar.

6. The unit does not have a humidity indicator. Again, this is more important for those of you who are a bit more serious about cellaring than I am. I have no idea how humid the air is inside the Haier cellar but I placed a small, inexpensive humidity pack in the back of the unit for insurance. I *believe* (though I'm not quite sure) that ideal cellaring conditions would have humidity at 65-70 percent to keep the corks from drying out. But this probably won't be a real concern for most people considering this unit.

7. The lock on the cellar is laughable; it's just an allen wrench. The keys are inscribed and indicate that the lock is meant to prevent small children from crawling inside the unit, which is just about all it /could/ prevent! You'll need a *real* lock if you want to keep your teens (or thirsty guests) from partaking. ;)

Well, I think that I've covered every complaint that I have and at the end of the day I still give this product 4.5 stars for features, quality and value. I haven't had to deal with customer service yet, thank goodness -- let's hope that day never comes.

This wine cellar is beautiful! It fits perfectly in my apartment and looks very sleek and classy. I am a wine lover and conesieur and I have many bottles that I like to keep as investments. This wine cellar maintains perfect temperature and protects the wine I store. I reccomend this item highly to anyone looking to keep their wine good for years...
